Specially trained psychologist who interprets test results in order to understand the relationship between a person's brain health and their thinking abilities, behavior, mood, and personality.
Common reasons include but are not limited to 1) being diagnosed with a neurological or other medical condition that may impact thinking abilities (see our Services Provided page for conditions within Dr. Snider's training), 2) an unexplained change in personality or mood or experiencing hallucinations or delusions, 3) changes in short-term memory, such as asking the same question over and over or forgetting conversations, 4) losing objects more frequently, 5) trouble recognizing familiar people, 6) poor judgment or decision-making, 7) increased confusion, 8) poor attention and concentration, 9) trouble staying organized or completing tasks, 10) difficulty communicating or finding the right word, 11) getting lost in familiar areas, 12) changes in ability to manage finances, driving, medications, cooking, etc. or general changes compared to prior abilities, 13) assess whether change in cognitive abilities are age-related or signs of a type of dementia, 14) develop a treatment plan to prepare for the future, 15) thinking decline and/or personality changes observed by an individual, their family, and/or physicians that are possible cause for concern in an effort to address earlier in a disease process, and 16) returning for a repeat evaluation to determine objective comparisons.
Obviously this depends on many factors and is unique to different patients. However, a neuropsychological evaluation often includes assessing Attention/concentration, processing speed, intellectual skills, learning, memory, language, visual-spatial functioning, fine motor skills (hand coordination and speed), executive functioning (e.g., planning, organization, multitasking/divided attention, problem solving, reasoning, etc.), personality and emotional functioning/mood/anxiety, etc.
Yes, for adults only. Some of the same areas as with neuropsychological evaluations are assessed in ADHD evaluations, as noted above. However, there are distinct differences between ADHD and neuropsychological evaluations. At times, patients present for an ADHD evaluation and Dr. Snider determines that a combination of ADHD and neuropsychological assessment is warranted. This is addressed on an individual basis.
If you are wishing to complete a neuropsychological evaluation, psychological evaluation, or ADHD evaluation, then YES a referral is required. Typically, these are faxed from Primary Care Physicians or Neurologists., but occasionally a referral may be received from a mental health professional.

All evaluations (neuropsychological, psychological, and ADHD) typically include 3 appointments, occasionally 4 appointments: Intake (approx. 90 minutes), 1 or 2 days for Testing (time varies depending on many factors -- See Patient-Psychologist Agreement Form), and Feedback (approx. 90 minutes).

If your insurance policy allows for mental health treatment, then an evaluation may be covered. The occasional insurance may not allow an ADHD evaluation for adults. This can be determined by calling your insurance and checking the following CPT/billing codes.
For neuropsychological AND ADHD evaluations: 90791, 96132, 96133, 96136, and 96137
For psychological evaluations: 90791, 96130, 96131, 96136, and 96137
For counseling: 90791, 90832, 90834, 90837.
These are done "in an office setting, not in a facility." This is important to specify during the verification process.
It is not uncommon for many insurances to apply a patient's deductible and co-insurance for an evaluation whereas many times, in our experience, counseling may only cost a copay. Thus, depending on your policy, an evaluation may be more expensive if you have a high deductible. There are some insurances that only require a copay for evaluations. Again, this can be determined through insurance verification. Please see our available methods of payment.
